Two Famous Landscapes, but Not One Simple Day Trip
Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou are often placed together on Sichuan itineraries because they are reached through the same northern transport corridor. However, the two scenic areas offer very different experiences.
Jiuzhaigou is a large valley system of lakes, waterfalls, forests and boardwalks. It normally deserves a complete sightseeing day. Huanglong is more compact, but its higher altitude and uphill walking make it physically more demanding.
The main planning question is therefore not whether to combine them, but which attraction should come first. The answer depends on trip length, arrival time, fitness, weather and the amount of transfer risk you are willing to accept.
Jiuzhaigou First or Huanglong First?
Both orders can work. One prioritises comfort and altitude adjustment, while the other prioritises transport efficiency.
Jiuzhaigou First, Huanglong Later
The more comfortable order for a four-day journey, first-time international visitors and travellers concerned about high altitude.
Huanglong First, Jiuzhaigou Later
The more efficient order for a compact three-day trip when an early train, reliable private transfer and good weather are available.

Northern Sichuan transport has improved considerably, but the train does not arrive directly at either scenic-area entrance. Road transfers are still required.

These times are planning estimates rather than guaranteed schedules. Train timetables, shuttle routes, pickup locations, traffic restrictions and road conditions can change. Reconfirm every connection for the visitor’s exact date.
A Balanced 4-Day Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou Route
This version places Jiuzhaigou first and avoids linking Huanglong to an overly tight return connection.
Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou
Chengdu → Huanglong Jiuzhai Station → JiuzhaigouTake a morning or midday train from Chengdu and continue by a pre-arranged shuttle or private vehicle to Jiuzhaigou. Check in near the scenic-area entrance and keep the evening light.
This day should remain primarily a transfer day. Avoid adding another major attraction simply because you arrive before dinner.
Full-Day Jiuzhaigou Visit
Rize Valley · Zechawa Valley · Shuzheng ValleyEnter early and use the park’s sightseeing buses to reach the upper valleys. Work gradually through the lakes, waterfalls and boardwalk sections rather than trying to walk every possible path.
Jiuzhaigou is a complete sightseeing day. Stay near the entrance for a second night so that there is no pressure to leave the park early for a long transfer.
Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong
Jiuzhaigou → Huanglong Scenic AreaLeave early and travel toward Huanglong. The scenic visit commonly takes several hours, depending on whether you use the cableway, your walking pace and how much time you spend around the upper pools.
After the visit, stay near Songpan, the railway station or another practical transfer point. This is safer than relying on a very tight evening train.
Return to Chengdu
Station-area hotel → Railway station → ChengduTake a suitable train back to Chengdu without having to rush directly from the scenic area. This separate return day also creates protection against changing mountain weather or slower-than-expected sightseeing.
A Compact 3-Day Route
This route is efficient, but it depends on an early arrival, smooth transfers and a visitor who can tolerate a demanding first day.
Chengdu → Huanglong → Jiuzhaigou
Take an early train, transfer directly to Huanglong, complete the scenic visit and continue to Jiuzhaigou for the night.
Full-Day Jiuzhaigou
Enter the park early and spend the entire day exploring its main valleys before returning to the same hotel.
Jiuzhaigou → Station → Chengdu
Leave enough time for the road transfer and take a suitably timed train back to Chengdu.
Why the Two Parks Need Different Strategies
Treating Huanglong as a smaller version of Jiuzhaigou leads to poor planning. Their scale, altitude and visitor movement are different.
Jiuzhaigou: Start Early
The park is extensive and visitor movement depends on the internal sightseeing-bus network. Early entry gives more flexibility to distribute time among the valleys.
Huanglong: Walk Slowly
The landscape is more concentrated, but the elevation and uphill sections can make a short distance feel more demanding than expected.
Transfers: Add Buffer
Mountain-road travel should not be planned as if it were an urban airport transfer. Allow time for traffic, weather, stops and pickup coordination.
Do Not Underestimate Huanglong’s Elevation
Huanglong’s altitude is the main physical difference between the two scenic areas. A visitor who walks comfortably in Chengdu may feel very different after arriving above 3,000 metres.
Move at a Controlled Pace
Avoid racing uphill or treating the scenic route as a fitness challenge.
Consider the Cableway
Using the uphill cableway can reduce unnecessary exertion, although walking is still required inside the scenic area.
Keep the First Evening Quiet
Rest, stay hydrated and avoid adding late activities after a long transfer day.
