Who This Route Suits

A strong first trip—under the right conditions.

This itinerary gives you variety without crossing several distant regions. Its main trade-off is pace: Leshan and Mount Emei add cultural depth, but they also reduce the amount of unstructured time in Chengdu.

  • Good for first-time visitors It combines Chengdu’s best-known urban experiences with two major heritage destinations.
  • Good for culture-focused travelers The route balances local life, Buddhist heritage, food and landscape.
  • Best with a balanced or active pace You should be comfortable with early starts, substantial walking and a hotel change.
Day by Day

A realistic five-day structure.

Use the tabs to review each day. Exact attraction access, transport schedules and opening conditions should be checked again for your dates.

Arriving in Chengdu
Day 1 · Chengdu

Arrive, settle in and let the city come to you.

The first day should absorb delays, jet lag and airport or station transfers. Avoid making it the day for a major attraction.

  1. Arrival Check in and orient yourself Choose a centrally located base and confirm the next morning’s route before heading out.
  2. Late afternoon Walk one nearby neighborhood Keep the route local. A riverside walk, old street area or neighborhood market is enough.
  3. Evening Have an easy first meal Start with dishes suited to your spice tolerance rather than treating the first dinner as a challenge.
Stay Central Chengdu, near convenient metro access
Pace Light and flexible
Main risk Overplanning the arrival day
Panda day in Chengdu
Day 2 · Chengdu

Pandas early, then experience Chengdu at a slower pace.

Make the panda visit the day’s main scheduled activity, then balance it with tea culture, food and a flexible evening.

  1. Early morning Visit the Chengdu Panda Base Arrive early and confirm current reservation, entry and route arrangements in advance.
  2. Lunch Choose one food district Try several small dishes in one area rather than crossing the city for a single restaurant.
  3. Afternoon Tea house and People’s Park Slow down, observe daily life and leave enough time to sit.
  4. Evening Choose food or Sichuan opera Do not force both if the day already feels full.
Stay Second night in Chengdu
Pace Early start, relaxed afternoon
Main risk Adding too many famous neighborhoods
Leshan Giant Buddha
Day 3 · Leshan

Move south for the Leshan Giant Buddha and riverside heritage.

This is both a sightseeing and transfer day. Avoid treating Leshan as a quick photo stop before an overly ambitious evening plan.

  1. Morning Travel from Chengdu to Leshan Choose the transport option that best connects your hotel, station and onward plan rather than judging by journey time alone.
  2. Midday Visit the Giant Buddha area Select the walking route, boat viewpoint or combination according to current access, queues, weather and mobility.
  3. Late afternoon Continue toward Mount Emei Check in near the area that best supports your Day 4 plan.
  4. Evening Keep dinner and the evening simple Prepare for the mountain day instead of adding another major attraction.
Stay Mount Emei area or another strategically chosen base
Pace Moderate, with luggage transfer
Main risk Underestimating door-to-door time
Mount Emei scenery
Day 4 · Mount Emei

Choose the mountain experience that fits the day you actually have.

Mount Emei is not one single experience. Build the day around current transport, weather, visibility, access and your walking ability.

  1. Early morning Begin from the most practical base Confirm the day’s transport sequence and any reservation or operating requirements before departure.
  2. Daytime Choose one main mountain focus Prioritize a summit-oriented plan, lower mountain heritage route or moderate walking experience rather than attempting everything.
  3. Late afternoon Return before the day becomes fragile Keep enough buffer for descent, transport and changing conditions.
  4. Evening Rest and prepare for the return Avoid placing a difficult extra activity after the mountain day.
Stay Second night near Mount Emei, or return only if timing is robust
Pace Active and weather-dependent
Main risk Trying to cover too much of the mountain
Returning to Chengdu
Day 5 · Return

Return to Chengdu without gambling with your departure.

The last day should protect onward travel. If your international departure is early or inflexible, return to Chengdu the previous evening.

  1. Morning Check out and begin the return Use a route that leaves meaningful buffer rather than the latest theoretically possible connection.
  2. Midday Return to Chengdu Store luggage and keep the remaining city plan close to your departure route.
  3. Afternoon Add only a flexible final experience Choose a meal, park, neighborhood or shopping stop that can be shortened without harming the trip.
Stay No extra night, unless departure timing requires it
Pace Transfer-led and flexible
Main risk Booking an inflexible departure too close to the return

Route Logic

Why this sequence works better than repeated day trips.

The route moves in one direction from Chengdu to Leshan and Mount Emei, reducing unnecessary returns. The main assumption is that the traveler accepts one hotel move and keeps Day 5 sufficiently flexible.

01

Use Chengdu for the city-focused days

Keep arrival, pandas, tea culture and food in one base.

02

Combine Leshan with the move south

Make the heritage visit part of the transfer instead of a separate return trip.

03

Give Mount Emei a dedicated day

Do not compress Leshan and a full mountain experience into one sightseeing block.

Where to Stay

Choose areas for route efficiency, not only appearance.

Hotel names change and prices fluctuate. The more durable decision is choosing the right area for transport and daily movement.

Central Chengdu accommodation area

Central Chengdu

Prioritize practical metro access, food options and a manageable route to the panda base departure point.

Best for Days 1–2 Metro access Food nearby
Leshan travel accommodation

Leshan Stopover

Usually unnecessary in this exact version unless transport, arrival time or a slower pace makes an overnight stay more sensible.

Optional Slower version More local time
Mount Emei accommodation area

Mount Emei Area

Select the base only after deciding your mountain route. The wrong location can add unnecessary transfer time before and after the visit.

Best for Days 3–4 Route dependent Early start support
Slower Alternative

Replace Mount Emei with Dujiangyan and Qingchengshan.

This version removes the hotel change and reduces the route’s fragility. It is better for families, travelers with limited mobility and anyone who values a calmer pace over covering more famous destinations.

Itinerary Questions

What to decide before booking.

The right version depends on arrival time, departure time, season, mobility and how much structure you want in each day.

Compare other trip lengths
It is enough for a compact introduction, not a slow exploration. The route works best when arrival and departure timing are favorable and you accept one hotel move.
You can, but in this itinerary it is usually more efficient to use Leshan as part of the move toward Mount Emei rather than returning to Chengdu first.
It may be possible under favorable conditions, but it can make the mountain day more rushed. Confirm the exact route and operating schedule before relying on it.
It depends on the children’s ages, walking ability and tolerance for transfers. Many families will prefer the slower Dujiangyan and Qingchengshan alternative.
Treating scheduled transport duration as the full transfer time. Hotel-to-station movement, waiting, local connections and luggage all affect the real day.
