First-Time Guide to Sichuan
Where to go, what to eat and how to build a realistic route through Chengdu, Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan, Huanglong, Jiuzhaigou, Leshan and Mount Emei.
Sichuan offers several very different kinds of journey in one province: relaxed city life in Chengdu, ancient Shu history at Sanxingdui, heritage engineering in Dujiangyan, colorful pools in Huanglong, lakes and waterfalls in Jiuzhaigou, and Buddhist culture in Leshan and Mount Emei.
One province, many different travel experiences.
A first trip can combine giant pandas, traditional tea houses, local food, archaeology, historic landscapes and some of China’s most recognizable natural scenery. The key is not to include everything, but to choose the places that best match your available time and interests.
Choose the main direction before adding more stops.
Chengdu: The Best Starting Point
Chengdu is the natural gateway for most first-time trips. The city combines the Panda Base, traditional tea houses, Sichuan food, historic neighborhoods and a relaxed local rhythm.
Sanxingdui
Visit for bronze masks, archaeological discoveries and the story of the ancient Shu civilization. It works well as a focused cultural excursion from Chengdu.
Dujiangyan
Choose Dujiangyan for ancient water engineering, riverside scenery and historic streets. It is one of the easiest heritage extensions from Chengdu.
Huanglong: Colorful Pools and Forest Walks
Huanglong is usually paired with Jiuzhaigou. Allow enough time for the scenic-area visit, changing weather and a slower walking pace when needed.
Jiuzhaigou: The Main Nature Destination
Jiuzhaigou is known for clear lakes, waterfalls and layered forest scenery. Treat it as a major destination rather than a quick stop, and protect a full sightseeing day for the park.
Leshan & Mount Emei
Combine the Leshan Giant Buddha with Mount Emei for a strong Buddhist heritage route. Two or three days are more comfortable than trying to compress both destinations into a rushed day trip.
Sichuan food is more than simply “spicy.”
The cuisine combines chili heat, Sichuan pepper, fermented seasonings, sweetness, acidity and rich savory flavors. A first visit should include both famous dishes and smaller everyday foods.
Sichuan Hotpot
Hotpot is one of the province’s defining food experiences. Travelers sensitive to spice can request a divided pot, reduced heat or a tomato or mushroom broth.
Mapo Tofu
Soft tofu in a rich sauce with fermented bean paste, chili and Sichuan pepper.
Dan Dan Noodles
Small noodles with a savory, spicy sauce—ideal for a tasting route.
Zhong Dumplings
Soft dumplings in a sweet, garlicky and spicy sauce.
Long Chao Shou
Chengdu-style wontons served in clear broth or red oil.
Twice-Cooked Pork
A savory classic with sliced pork, peppers and fermented seasoning.
Kung Pao Chicken
A balanced combination of chicken, peanuts, chili, vinegar and sweetness.
Match the number of destinations to your available time.

Sichuan Grand Tour
Add Sanxingdui and Mount Emei for a broader culture-and-nature journey.
Build the route around real travel time.
Limit the major regions
Two destinations can both be in Sichuan and still require a long transfer.
Count door-to-door time
Include station transfers, waiting, luggage and local transport.
Protect transfer days
Do not count a long arrival or return journey as a full sightseeing day.
Check current attraction access
Operating hours, ticket rules and seasonal conditions can change.
Prepare for different conditions
Huanglong, Jiuzhaigou and Mount Emei may feel very different from Chengdu.
Keep one flexible block
A free half-day can improve the trip more than one additional attraction.
Confirm the final version before payment
